I try to eat Organic as much as possible, however sometimes the bill can get a little expensive so I find this list super helpful! The Dirty Dozen and Clean 15 is a list that is produced by the EWG each year. When shopping, if you cannot afford to buy everything Organic (like most people my age), make sure to have this list printed out or saved on your phone so you can avoid unwanted pesticides whenever possible.
Pesticides are linked to disorders throughout the entire body, we are really now just beginning to learn extensively about the long term effects of consuming pesticides. Diets that are high in pesticides have been linked to brain/nervous system toxicity, hormone disruption and even cancer. That is why it is especially important that your developing children have a pesticide free diet. The foods that they consume now will play a major role in their adulthood.
The foods listed on the Dirty Dozen, on average tested for 47 different chemicals when grown conventionally. Some of the foods had upward to 67! It is amazing that they are even allowed to get away with growing food in this way. Kale, Collard Greens and Sweet Bell Peppers tested for high levels of chemicals that are extremely toxic to the nervous system. You can look further into the full list here and see where foods rank based on their pesticide levels (www.foodnews.org).
Keep in mind, that even the foods listed on the Clean 15 list have trace levels of pesticides. However, during these studies, no fruit or vegetable contained more than 4 types of pesticides when thoroughly washed. Not for nothing, but they do use a high quality food washer when they complete these tests. Which the sink in my house or your house, I’m sure hardly compares to. So here is the list, try to buy organic when you can, but if not keep up with this list yearly. For more information you can also visit this link. Good Eats!
